On account

When is an account not an account?

Simple request, really: to show the surplus funds the bank has to invest, by account.  We go to work and find the cashflows, which we then bunch up by… wait a minute, where’s the account data attribute?  It must be account_id, right?  No, that’s the customer bank account – see, they are all different types: demand, term deposit, foreign currency, etc.  Let’s look somewhere else.

How about this portfolio_id?  Surely each portfolio has an identifiable owner, just like an account.  And every front office system captures the portfolio for each transaction… Apart from this one here, which doesn’t have the concept of a portfolio; it records transactions directly on a ledger account…

So out we go in the bank, to find out who means what by “account”…
